Abstract Art and Modern Art - A Definition Abstract art such as that by Van Renselar focuses on interpreting the artist's reaction to a subject rather than an accurate physical representation of that subject. Abstract artists select and then amplify or simplify the shapes and images suggested by the world the artist experiences around them. Abstract art paintings don’t normally display recognizable objects but allows the artist’s imagination to be expressed freely on the canvas. Modern Art is a general term, used for most of the artistic output from the late 19th century. Modern art refers to a new approach to art where it is no longer important to literally represent a subject.
