What does Abstract Art mean? Many people must be asking this question when confronted with an abstract artist's work... and not getting an answer that make sense to them. So, as an abstract artist, I will give my own views. But first... The painting that is free from representational imagery is an abstract painting, it does not depict any recognisable image such as a person, landscape, or object. The artist makes no deliberate attempt to reproduce or render anything physically. Kandinsky, for instance, was one of the first abstract artists and produced many fine examples of the genre. The important thing to remember here is that he had no intention of producing a likeness of anything physical whatsoever. So his style of art is described as abstract art. The only other thing I would say here is that the abstract artist is seeking to put on canvas such non-figurative 'imagery' as emotion, thought, the inner self, music, symbolism, to name just a few. Abstract art is not for everyone, some people are instinctively drawn to modern abstract art - I count myself amongst them. Some paintings are described as semi-abstract. For me there is no such thing - either the picture does or does not attempt to represent something. Having said that, I occasionally use a figurative element in my artworks, but they are seldom used to say anything about what they visually resemble, rather they are used as a kind of symbol. Many viewers of modern abstract art try to discern a 'message' that they might believe is an essential element of the painting, but at the same time can also enjoy its colour, composition and mood for its own sake, without any pretensions. My advice: When looking at an abstract painting, empty your mind of all preconceptions, 'feel' the image and just let the painting 'wash over you'. VR.
